The State of European Backend Jobs: August 2026
JobSnout tracked 8,035 active, deduplicated programming jobs from 2,011 hiring companies on 29 August 2026.
This is the first market snapshot from the dataset. It is deliberately a baseline, not a trend report: collection began on 24 August, only five days before the snapshot. The value today is a consistent view of demand, location, workplace model and advertised pay. The value later will be seeing how those measures change.

Canonical means duplicate copies of the same vacancy are excluded. A single job can still count under several skills or geographic areas when the employer explicitly lists them.
Python led the language market

This is not a list of mutually exclusive jobs. A backend posting can mention Java, AWS, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL and distributed systems and contribute to all five totals.
The combination tells a more useful story than the rank alone. Employers were not merely looking for language syntax. Cloud platforms, containers, databases, APIs and distributed-system experience appeared throughout the market.
Remote and hybrid were both substantial

Among jobs with a known arrangement, remote and hybrid were almost level. On-site-only work formed the smallest group.
The unknown category is important. JobSnout does not infer remote, hybrid or on-site status from vague wording. Those 3,281 jobs should not be redistributed across the other groups without stronger evidence.
The UK was the largest covered market

London alone appeared in 1,127 active postings, followed by Paris at 324, Berlin at 279, Warsaw at 266, Munich at 239, Madrid at 227 and Barcelona at 197.
Country totals can overlap. A remote posting open across several named countries belongs to each applicable country. Europe-wide postings without a specific country are handled separately and do not acquire an invented town.
Senior roles greatly outnumbered explicitly junior ones

The visible imbalance is striking, but the unknown group is almost half the market. “Only 168 junior jobs exist” would therefore be an overclaim. The defensible statement is that only 168 active postings explicitly supplied strong junior-level evidence under JobSnout's conservative classifier.
Even with that qualification, employers were much more likely to advertise senior than junior labels. That is worth monitoring as the dataset matures.
Four in five jobs showed no salary
Only 1,575 active jobs—19.6%—displayed an employer-provided salary or rate.
Salary visibility was 30.0% for on-site jobs, 16.0% for remote jobs and 13.3% for hybrid jobs. The result does not prove workplace arrangement determines transparency, because the groups have different source, country and employer mixes. It does show how much of the market remains difficult to compare before an application.
Among technologies with at least 20 active salary observations, the highest median advertised salaries were:

These are descriptive medians, not causal skill premiums. High-paying skills can be concentrated in senior roles, expensive cities or particular industries. Jobs also appear in several skill samples.
What the first snapshot suggests
Five themes stand out:
- Python has the broadest language footprint, while Java remains a large European backend market.
- Cloud and infrastructure knowledge appears alongside languages throughout the demand table.
- Remote and hybrid vacancies are both material; neither has displaced the other.
- Explicitly junior opportunities are scarce relative to senior-labelled roles, although missing seniority data limits the conclusion.
- Salary opacity is still the norm, which makes employer-provided ranges a meaningful differentiator.
What this snapshot cannot tell us yet
Five days of collection cannot establish whether Python demand is rising, whether remote hiring is falling, how long a typical vacancy remains open or whether salaries are moving.
Those questions need repeated observations. Future monthly editions should track:
- new and closed jobs by skill;
- median time a posting remains active;
- changing remote, hybrid and on-site shares;
- salary transparency by country and source;
- companies entering and leaving the market;
- skill salary medians only after stable minimum samples are reached.
Keeping the definitions fixed will matter more than producing a dramatic headline. A consistent series can distinguish a market change from a change in JobSnout's source coverage.
Methodology and limitations
This report uses active, canonical jobs collected by JobSnout as of 29 August 2026. The observation window begins on 24 August. JobSnout scans supported company career systems and selected public job sources, classifies jobs with deterministic rules and hides duplicate copies from aggregate counts.
Technology totals overlap. Country totals can overlap for multi-country jobs. Unknown classifications remain unknown rather than being guessed.
Salary analysis includes employer-provided compensation that JobSnout can normalise, uses the midpoint of ranges and converts supported currencies to EUR with ECB reference rates dated 28 August 2026. It does not adjust for tax, benefits, equity, purchasing power, geography, seniority or occupation mix.
JobSnout does not cover every European employer, so the report describes the collected market rather than claiming to be a complete census.
